Canto do Brasil

41 Franklin (at Oak)
San Francisco, CA 94102
415-626-8727
Website
Of the three Brazilian restaurants in town, this cozy neighborhood spot has the warmest, truest atmosphere, and generally the most authentic kitchen. The video screens show G-rated Carnaval scenes, the sound system plays Brazilian pop, the service is caring. Conquer your fear of frying: The flawless appetizers include french-fried manioc, fried calamari, weightless kibbe, and unbattered fried chicken wings with lemon juice and garlic (not buffalo wings but Bahia wings). The feijoada completa (Saturdays and Sundays only), Brazil's answer to cassoulet, is authentic, generous, and complex-flavored with a bright hit of cilantro. And if the hot pepper quotient is overly considerate of yanqui palates, the hot table sauce is anything but. The seafood and chicken dishes are badly overcooked, though, and the sides unspecial. For dessert, the exquisite coconut flan is tender as a virgin's breast.
